Uniting Distant Stars Academy: Innovative Physical Activities That Engage Both Body and Mind

The Uniting Distant Stars Campus sits on a half-lot and there is no room for a playground. However, Kelvin Fomba, Liberian Co-Founder and Director created ways to provide fun student activities to stimulate their bodies and minds.

One activity occurs outside the gate. Kelvin gets three different types of soft drink bottles and lines them up side by side. Then a group of students line up in a row behind the middle bottle. Then Kelvin yells a soft drink name such as Coke, and the students jump over to line up behind that bottle. He randomly calls out the bottle names, and if any student jumps the wrong way, they are disqualified. This continues until one student remains.

The above left photo shows the activity with the soft drink bottles. The students are lined up behind the green bottle. Kelvin Fomba is standing by the coke bottle, and there is another one blocked out by the students on the right.

Another activity happens in the common area of the campus. He draws what looks like a flower and the students stand in each pedal. He then gives directions to jump back, forward, left, and right. Again, the activity continues until all but one student is disqualified.

Both activities require focus and attentive listening skills to ensure the students don’t jump the wrong way. They also bring a moment of fun and laughter among the students.
