COVID-19 Liberia Status Updates

The United Nations declares that the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and the greatest challenge we have faced since World War Two. As I write this newsletter, over 1,923,210 people have been diagnosed with the virus, 119,586 people have died and 443,883 people have recovered from the virus.

In our last newsletter, we shared how Liberia enacted safety protocols that closed schools. Since then, the cases in Liberia continue to rise. As of April 11, there has been 48 confirmed cases, 3 people recovered, and sadly, 5 people died as of April 11. Liberia's Ministry of Health extended the school closure from March 31 to time indefinite on April 1. Liberia's President George Weah declared a State of Emergency on April 8. Also, a 21-day countrywide lockdown to start April 11.

UDS postponed the 2019/2020 vocational students' graduation for April 25 and continues to suspend the 2020/2021 class recruitment. Kelvin Fomba, UDS Co-Founder and Director in Liberia, has been calling and checking in your primary and vocational students. This has been a welcome comfort to our students. He also receives numerous calls from our new recruits, who are eager to start their vocational training. He reassures that they will have their place once we get the all-clear to open schools again.

Everywhere around the world, people are facing this unprecedented pandemic. We are all in this together and must each do our part to help slow down the spread of the virus.
